"Specialist pre-action sprinkler system protects sensitive manufacturing equipment"

Completed and handed over in June 2026, this project involved the design, installation and commissioning of a new automatic fire sprinkler system for TST Nottingham, including three wet sprinkler systems and a specialist nitrogen-filled single interlock pre-action system to protect critical manufacturing equipment.

TST specialises in advanced surface coating technologies for gas turbine components used within the aviation and aerospace industries. To safeguard this specialist equipment, the pre-action system was designed to discharge water only following both operation of the fire detection system and activation of a sprinkler head, significantly reducing the risk of accidental water damage during maintenance.

Richmond Fire Engineers delivered the complete turnkey package, including in-house design, hydraulic calculations, FM Global liaison, new water storage, a dedicated pump house, two diesel fire pumps, trunk mains, civils, electrical works, trace heating and all associated sprinkler infrastructure. The project also included frost protection, removal and reinstatement of approximately 950m² of suspended ceilings, and Principal Contractor responsibilities under the CDM Regulations.

The project was completed safely, on programme and with minimal disruption to the client's live manufacturing operations, delivering a robust fire protection solution for this specialist aerospace facility.
